Beyond Delivery: Rethinking Project Success Through Vision, Value, and Purpose
Description
Project success is increasingly being understood beyond the traditional measures of scope, schedule, and budget. While delivery performance remains important, it does not fully explain whether a project has created meaningful value, whether benefits have been realized, or whether stakeholders perceive the project as successful.
This session invites participants to rethink project success through the lenses of vision, value, and purpose. It explores why value is not always obvious, stable, or perceived in the same way by all stakeholders — and how project professionals can play a stronger role in making value explicit, aligned, and adaptable as conditions change.
Drawing on PMI perspectives, practical examples, and collaborative reflections, the session will connect project success with value worth the effort and expense, stakeholder alignment, and the human meaning that sustains commitment. It will also build on PMI’s M.O.R.E. mindset as a practical reflection lens throughout the project journey.
Key Objectives/Deliverables
- Explain how project success is evolving from traditional delivery measures toward value, outcomes, stakeholder perception, and strategic relevance.
- Distinguish project management success from project success, recognizing that scope, schedule, and budget are important but not sufficient to determine whether a project has created meaningful value.
- Recognize why value is not self-evident, including how it may be perceived differently by stakeholders and change as context evolves.
- Describe how vision, value, and purpose are interconnected in shaping project success and sustaining alignment, engagement, and commitment.
- Use PMI’s M.O.R.E. mindset as a reflection lens to manage perceptions, own success, reassess assumptions, and expand perspective as project conditions change.
