Ownership engagement – a prerequisite for project success

Ways of Working

Description

Why do you need to convince company management, on the importance of a project? They are often the ones paying for it and getting the related benefits.

Why doesn't the Project Owner find time for a workshop to clarify the goals or for a meeting dealing with the necessary resourcing?

Sometimes the Steering Group micromanages, sometimes the Project Owner hasn't even had time to look at the materials. Important decisions are not made, since not everyone shows up to the important meetings.

Are the questions or the situations familiar to you?

The Steering Group, with the Owner as the key member, acts as a bridge between the organization's management and the Project Team implementing the work. The Owner purpose is to ensure that strategic goals are obtained and to enable the Project Manager to achieve the foreseen results together with the Project Team. The Steering Group should act as the "Board" of the project, and enable the Project Manager to operate as the projects “CEO”.

However, the roles and responsibilities of the Steering Group/Owner are often unclear. The project Owner's task are seldom defined with necessary clarity. Owner engagement does not get the priority needed.

Join the PMIFinland webinar discussing the key role of the owner for the success of any project.
